Can physical therapy help you avoid surgery and medications?

"While surgery and prescription drugs can be the best course of treatment for certain diagnoses," said physical therapist Michael Shannon from NovaCare Rehabilitation.  "There is increasing evidence that conservative treatments like physical therapy can be equally effective and less costly for many conditions."  For example:

  • "Low back pain is routinely over-treated with unnecessary surgery despite abundant evidence that physical therapy is a cost-effective treatment that often avoids MRIs that can increase the cost of care and diminishes the likelihood for surgery and injections," said Dr. Brian Grawe from UC Health.
  • "Physical therapy has proven to be as effective as surgery for meniscal tears and knee osteoarthritis, rotator cuff tears, and degenerative disk disease, among other conditions," said Grawe.

What are the best beverages for runners and walkers?

  • Tea or Coffee. Aside from providing performance-boosting caffeine, both drinks are rich in antioxidants. Be careful, though, about what you put in them. That's where a good thing becomes not so good.
  • Water. Perfect.
  • Sports Drinks. When you're running and walking a long distance and feeling drained, these are ideal. Drinks like Hoist contain electrolytes and carbs that help prevent fatigue.
  • Chocolate milk. Ha! You can feel like a kid again with this nutrient mix that leads to better muscle protein production.
  • Wine or beer. Okay, maybe alcohol shouldn't top the list, but wine and beer do supply beneficial phytonutrients. You can toast to your finish line success!
