McDonald's Kids Run for the Little Ones

Oh, What FUN it is to RUN

Children see magic because they look for it. Children know how to fly because no one told them they couldn't. Children love to play. Children take naps. Children make your life wonderful... even if you don't get much rest!

If you want to see some kind of wonderful, register your children for the McDonald's Kids Run and see hundreds of beautiful faces dance and laugh and fly to the finish line.

The non-competitive loop course is about a quarter mile on Second St. for children 5 to 10 years old at 8:30 a.m. The kids will start and finish at the official start and finish line race banners — just like Mom and Dad. Ronald McDonald and volunteers from St. Ursula and Girls on the Run — along with proud parents — will greet each child at the finish with a large customized medal.

Who could ask for anything more? Okay, there is more! You will still have time to run or walk the 10k at 9 a.m. Register and the kids will cheer for you!

Do you have the right car for your back?

  • Get the right vehicle
    "Bigger cars allow you to make more adjustments to your seating," said TriHealth physical medicine specialist Shrishail Nashi, M.D.  "They also help you sit more vertically, which keeps your knees level with your hips."


  • Set your seat properly
    "Don't push it so far back that you have to lean and hunch forward to reach the steering wheel," said Dr. Nashi.


  • More support
    "If you still have back pain, get a few small pillows for additional support," said Dr. Nashi.  "Some people need support between their shoulder blades, while others need more lumbar support near their lower spine."


  • Take breaks
    "If you have a long trip ahead of you, stop about every hour to stand, stretch and redistribute your weight," said Dr. Nashi.

Why is running one of the best exercises for weight loss?

Any exercise is good exercise, but when it comes to losing weight, it's hard to beat running.

  • Running works even when you're at rest
    "High-intensity exercise like running stimulates more 'after-burn' than low-intensity exercise," said Cameron Simoneau from Tri-State Running Co. "Your resting energy expenditure stays elevated after you run so you're still burning calories."


  • Running is time-efficient
    "Running is a considerably faster way to burn those calories," said Simoneau. "Most people can run two or three times as far as they can walk in a given amount of time."


  • Running is convenient
    "You can do it almost anywhere," said Simoneau. "You don't need any special equipment beyond a pair of good running shoes. It's accessible, and there are fewer barriers to maintaining a routine, even while traveling."


  • Runners' high
    "The first rule of exercising for weight loss is that if you don't enjoy it, you won't stick with it," said Simoneau. "Many runners experience that happy sensation after a run or race." Makes you want to go for another run, right?

What are some great ways to motivate yourself to exercise?
  • Become an early bird. “Willpower isn’t an unlimited resource – the more you use it throughout the day, the less you have left at night to force yourself to work out,” says fitness expert Christine Lindner, co-founder of Inner Fire Fitness. “Also, if you wait until later in the day, it’s a lot likelier that things will pop up and get in the way of working out.”

  • Get other people involved. “Find a friend who likes the same things you do, like running or a boot camp,” says fitness expert Amanda Bloomquist, co-founder of Inner Fire Fitness. “It provides accountability. It’s social.  It’s fun.”

  • Set smaller goals. "Most of the time, people don't work out because it seems like an intimidating, daunting task," says Lindner. "But you don't have to run a 10-miler or spend hours at a gym. Find something you love and just keep 'playing' at it."

  • Keep equipment in a 'good' place. "Sometimes a simple thing like putting your workout equipment in a central room — not by the washing machine in the basement — can be inspiring," says Bloomquist."

  • Find a fun gym that's close to your work or home. "If it's too far away or not inviting, you just won't go," says Lindner. "Invest in a place that you love."

  • Involve the whole family. "Family time is important, so try activities like 'hiking' downtown or at the park with the kids," says Lindner.
