Why go to physical therapy?
  • Avoid surgery.
"If physical therapy helps you eliminate pain or heal from an injury, surgery may not be needed," said TriHealth physical therapist Kelly Lyons. "And even if surgery is required, you may benefit from a course of 'prehab' physical therapy before surgery to help you recover faster."

  • Reduce or eliminate pain.
"Joint and soft tissue mobilization or treatments such as ultrasound, taping or electrical stimulation can help relieve pain and restore muscle and joint function to reduce inflammatory pain. Such therapies can also prevent pain from returning," said Lyons.

  • Recover from a sports injury.
"Physical therapists understand how different sports can increase your risk for specific types of injuries," said Lyons. "They can design appropriate recovery or prevention exercise programs to ensure a safe return to your sport."

  • Manage age-related issues.
"As individuals age, they may develop arthritis or osteoporosis or need a joint replacement," said Lyons. "Physical therapists are experts in helping patients recover from joint replacement and manage arthritic or osteoporotic conditions conservatively."

What is the biggest mistake that puts every runner in danger on the road?

Running on the road with traffic.

"If there is no sidewalk, always run and walk on the side of the road facing traffic," said Cameron Simoneau from Tr-State Running Co. Although no federal laws mandate which side you should be on, the U.S. Transportation Dept. recommends running against traffic.

The reason is simple — you can't react to something you can't see. "Facing traffic, you can react quicker to a wayward — or distracted — driver," said Simoneau. "Runners should practice "defensive running" in the same vein as defensive driving, which also includes bright colored, reflective clothing, no headphones and eye-contact with oncoming drivers."

Grown-ups throw tantrums too. Why?

We politely call them disagreements and they usually occur out of sheer frustration. Remember HALT — hungry, agitated, lonely, tired? Which is it?

How can you use workplace email most effectively?
  • Personalize
"No matter whether it's an internal email to your favorite co-worker or a message containing important information to a client, you should always get in the habit of addressing that person appropriately," said Alvin Roehr CEO of the Roehr Agency.

  • Adapt
"Know your recipient," said John Barrett, CEO of Western & Southern. "Study past emails, recognize tone, writing style, and length so you model the same."

  • Always check before clicking 'send'
"One of the worst feelings is clicking 'send,' only to realize that you missed something, didn't attach a document, or misspelled something," said Roehr. "Read your message and doublecheck attachments before you send."

  • Keep messages short
"There's no point to an email with extraneous details," said Barrett. "Get straight to the point. An email that could double as a short story is not time-effective for both sender and recipient."

  • Keep your inbox clean
We know you're out there -- the folks with unopened emails that number in the triple digits or worse. "Work toward diminishing the stress that can result from seeing big numbers next to your inbox button," said Roehr.

  • Check email on your time
"One of the biggest momentum killers is checking your email frequently and having to reset your focus," said Barrett. "Whenever possible, set time aside for email review and response based on your daily schedule."

TIME to Laugh

Go outside when it's raining, jump in a few puddles and get all wet. Try it sometime when you have something "good" on. I realize this is pushing the envelope, but some days you have to live large.
